Classroom Expectations
The teacher’s primary role is to provide an excellent learning experience. The helper’s primary role is to assist the teacher, while taking an active role in monitoring student behavior to encourage and protect an atmosphere where positive learning can occur. This allows the teacher to focus on teaching. The child’s primary role is to participate within the class in a way that promotes a positive learning experience for him or herself and for others. The parent’s primary role is to review these policies with their child, and to cooperate with teachers and helpers to promote the goal of a positive learning experience for all students.
Please use this checklist to help us ensure uniform expectations in all Activity Day classes. Each class will have unique rules and policies suited to that specific classroom, but the following unacceptable behaviors apply to all classes. If an unacceptable behavior continues after the specified number of warnings have been administered, the helper should ask the student to leave the classroom with them, and then escort the child to his or her parent to stay for the remainder of the class period. The teacher should follow up with the parent within 24 hours.
-
No Warnings: physical harm or intention of physical harm to another student or adult (kicking, hitting, biting, etc.)
-
One Warning: verbal harm to another student (name-calling, teasing, rudeness, unkindness, etc.) or verbal disrespectfulness to an adult (back-talking, rudeness, refusal to cooperate, etc.)
-
Two to Three Warnings: disrupting class, interrupting the teacher, refusal to participate in class activity (This mainly applies to older students, as it’s understandable that sometimes young children are still learning appropriate classroom behavior.)
Anytime there is continual unacceptable behavior which is communicated to the parent, whether it occurs during the same class period or over several classes, the parent needs to work with the teacher to make a plan for how future problems should be handled. If the teacher has had ongoing communication with the parent, but the behavior still continues, the teacher should notify the Team. The Discipline Policy will then be enacted.
